What we measure

One propulsion sensing platform, applied across the sealed systems that decide a mission. Manufacturing condition, firing behaviour and service-life change, all read from the outside or through an integrated sensing layer.

Built around the article, not the inspection bay.

The integration design is agreed for the motor, its materials and its operating environment. One shared measurement core serves the sensing array, capture electronics and software layer.

Sensor layerPrinted, passive electrodes

A thin-film array measures changes in the electrical properties of materials inside the motor. Position and construction are selected for the application, including chemistry, thermal conditions and structural interfaces.

Measurement coreExcitation, acquisition, capture

Electronics excite electrode pairs and record capacitance frames with time and calibration context. Retaining the raw record allows new analysis methods to be applied later.

Software layerReconstruction and motor history

Algorithms turn the frames into tomographic views or targeted condition indicators. Comparison against a motor-specific baseline can help identify meaningful changes, subject to calibration and validation.

01Applications

Three points of use. One data foundation.

Different questions, deliberately distinct validation paths.

DEVELOPMENT

Firing and test analysis

Track changes in internal distribution during propulsion tests and relate the sensor response to pressure, temperature and other test-stand data. Previous hybrid-rocket research demonstrated combustion imaging; the next challenge is application-specific performance in customer motors.

PRODUCTION

Manufacturing and acceptance

Investigate material distribution, internal gaps and changes during manufacture. Known-feature detection has been demonstrated in controlled assembled hardware; detection limits and calibration must be established for each production geometry.

IN SERVICE

Surveillance and condition trends

Compare measurements of the same motor over time as part of a wider health-assurance programme. The intended benefit is unit-level evidence to complement established non-destructive inspection and stockpile sampling, not replace them without qualification.

02Hardware and software

From electrode geometry to a usable signal.

Electrode array and acquisition electronics Twelve electrodes surround a motor. Eleven individual receiver chords extend from the active top electrode; a grouped harness routes the array to driver, multiplexer, analogue filter, digitiser and time-stamped frame buffer. Hardware side. A motor-integrated sensing band feeds a dedicated front end, where excitation, multiplexing and time-stamped acquisition turn electrode-pair reads into a structured dataset.
Software reconstruction and analysis workflow A three-stage processing sequence feeds multiple axial tomographic slices, a cell-by-cell change map and a condition-history trace with a reference level.
